Wow, it’s been a while

I’m yet again, as per usual at this point, having troubles with Dimension O.U. (That’s what I’m calling it currently). I really would like to get a good chunk of the characters (Fishbowl and D O.U. alike) designed, because I find the longer you wait to do something like that the harder it is (same can be said for names). The problem is, I’m having like total and complete art block with the Others. Nothing feels right, nothing looks right, and I’m not getting any inspiration from Pinterest as I normally would.

I think part of it is stemming from my constant back and forth between how humanoid I want them to be, along with my need to make things controlled and in reality, something that is not supposed to be the case with this. Sometimes I wonder if I’m just not built for this kind of aesthetic.

To add to things, the Others are supposed to have designs that can be translated into little crocheted characters, or at least plushies, as I may just have to change Sonny’s hobby to just crafts in general so I can make the designs more diverse, if that makes any sense.

I figured I could help myself think of them and how I want them to look, represent, and be inspired by; by making collages of different things that I can connect to them. You know, colors, objects, animals, pictures in general. And if it comes down to it, Sonny’s little creations can be portrayed by some of those things rather than a direct replica of the characters. Then I can give them more diverse appearances as their silly little plush versions and not have to go as insane trying to make their actual appearances.

World Description:

In this Solarpunk-Fantasy world is a place that once prided themselves in being the first citywide community to completely abandon fossil fuels and create an eco friendly but still sustainable city environment. To keep their air free from the pollution surrounding many of the neighboring cities, this city has been shelled by a massive self-filtering bubble dome, and those inhabitants who wish to venture out are required to wear a bubble over their heads. In the wind of the outside world, many a person spoke of this supposed paradise, but it didn’t take long for a new view of it to emerge. “That dome isn’t a bubble, it may as well be glass.” “Stuck up is what they are, think they’re better than everyone else.” “They don’t have much of a choice, it’s all they know.” “You know what, I know what it is now, it’s a Fishbowl!”

As it is, as it’s known, ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl.’

Synopsis:

In a time where “don’t be a Fish~” is a common jeer, all in this more lush Solarpunk-Fantasy world continue on, their lives vastly different from each other.

Sonny Cooper is the adopted son of the Fishbowl’s Mayor, he is a well-loved boy who enjoys crocheting silly characters and spends most of his time as a social butterfly talking to anyone and everyone he finds interesting. He is often shadowed by his best friend, Iris Chamberlain, daughter of a well-known officer of the Fishbowl; and drags around the local troublemaker, Winter Finnegan. As for the people he finds interesting, it’s likely they’ll gain a character based off of them; but if I told you those characters were actually real and Sonny had the sole ability to glimpse into their dimension, would you believe me?

In the outside world, and on a journey towards the Fishbowl in the hopes of escaping their old lives, is Mark Harvey, an optimistic blind man, and his friend and self-made protector, Colin Gray. They travel throughout their world on the Glass Sky, a large crystalline pathway stretching above the ground, along with their giant Griffin-like creature, Yubie.

Finally, in a part of the world turned barren and scraped by the refusal to do something about the careless use of pollutants, continues to live a small found family in the bunker lovingly called the Bench. Reese ‘Halloway’ Wesforn’s husband, an inventor that made their lifestyle possible, has long been deceased, leaving a mere engineer such as herself to look after their home. Now, she also finds herself mothering the forced runaways Jennifer Halloway and Monica McKillian, and the three of them live their chaotic lives to the fullest, dragging around a clueless miniature greyhound they named Doofus.

I’ve decided I need to take a nice break from trying to figure out Dimension O.U., it’s not working right now and trying to get it to work isn’t the best idea I think. Besides, I like thinking about the other world (that really needs a name that’s not ‘the Normal Dimension’) a lot more right now, and I’ve been having fun expanding the Fishbowl cast, side characters and whatnot.

Here’s a little list so far of the notable characters, some have names some do not, so some will generally have placeholder titles:

The Mayor’s House:

Mayor Cathleen Amberose

Sonny Cooper

The triplets

Older sister

Older brother

The Finnegan’s:

Granny Finnegan (Nesha)

Nicholas Finnegan

Winter Finnegan

The Chamberlain’s Apartment Complex:

Iris Chamberlain

Mr. Chamberlain

Mrs. Chamberlain

Mr. Cole

Mr. Wysley

Miscellaneous:

The Yarn Lady

The News Girl

Outside the Fishbowl:

The Kindergarten Teacher

Betsy Roo An. (BT-R0 Android)

On the Glass Sky:

Mark Harvey

Colin Gray

In the Bench:

Reese ‘Halloway’ Wesforn

Monica McKillian

Jennifer Halloway

The Kindergarden Teacher and Betsy Roo An might become another POV, we’ll see what happens. POVs are generally what I consider characters that are focused on the most in the story, which I view mainly as comic strips akin to stories like Calvin and Hobbes, The Peanuts, and other such things. I do wonder if the Normal Dimension’s story would be something you’d consider as ‘Slice of Life,’ I don’t think I’ve ever really done that before. I like the idea of focusing on the Triplet’s kindergarden teacher and their general shenanigans, having to deal with a bunch of kids all the time. Whether they’d have an Other or not, I’m not sure; I think Sonny would be interested enough in them just based on their connection to his little siblings and his general personality. Betsy Roo An, being an Android, obviously would not. She’s kind of the more tolerant of the two, much more patient and caring towards the tiny children. Unless her personality changes, that’s always a possibility, but for now she’s more gentle.

The Kindergarten, which is currently unnamed, is located right outside of the Fishbowl, yet most who go to it are Fishbowl residents. It just happened to become popular, plus the Fishbowl residents were welcomed to it so it became very well liked. Those who go to it still have to wear their protective gear though, otherwise they get ‘hosed down’ before coming back into the Fishbowl, for lack of a better term. So it’s basically full of a bunch of tiny children who run around with bubbles over their heads, normally running into each other and bumping heads.

Most in the Fishbowl work in some capacity, there aren’t many ‘stay at home’ parents, so daycares, babysitters, and general schools for the very young are very often used. Babysitting is a popular first job for teenagers.

The Kindergarten teacher lives in one of the few small towns that follow very simple lifestyles, focusing more on cultivating and maintaining nature, the small state between what is the Fishbowl and the desert area. He is one of the few people that treat those living in the Fishbowl nicely, though there’s often plenty of gossip surrounding him because of it. He lost most of his residential customers so his establishment is now mainly used by the Fishbowl community, they consider him ‘one of the nice ones.’

Concept Design [#008]

The initial concept for the Triplets. I drew this up really quick so don’t be surprised if they change later on down the road. It depends on what I feel like doing and how many side characters begin piling up. I’m trying to mainly focus on the MCs so the time I spend on side character designs will probably depend on how prominent they are and if I like them enough to revisit.

To call them something other than POV 1 2 and 3 I’ve started calling them by group names lol, kind of weird but I’ve been using the kind of things you normally see in fandoms, duos and trios and whatnot. Once again kind of weird, but it makes things easier on my part.

I ended up deciding to add a third character to the Bench group, I had been going back and forth on them because they were so fuzzy in my brain but I figured Jennifer and Monica needed an adult in their lives. I found it funny though if they are seen as someone who should be the responsible adult for those two rowdy teenagers, but in reality they are just as rowdy as them, and actually encourages the behavior. Honestly Monica’s probably the only one with a braincell in the group, her and their miniature greyhound Doofus (yes that’s his name, but they normally call him Doof, Oofie, or little man), actually Doof probably has negative braincells 50% of the time.

The adult’s name is Reese ‘Halloway’ Wesforn, she’s Jennifer’s cousin, and also the engineer of the place; though her deceased husband was the one who actually invented half the stuff; Reese just knows enough to keep things running.

I’ve been calling them Rusty Bench Trio lol, easier to remember then POV 3 but quicker than saying Jennifer Monica and Reese’s group. Yes technically Bench group is quickest, but Rusty Bench trio has more character. So there.

Sonny’s group is called Weather trio, you get to guess why lol

Found out that Monica shares a surname with a US President, so I’m going to change it, just cause it otherwise just seems a bit weird to me.

________

I’ve decided to fully embrace funny names for places like the Fishbowl, the Bench and whatnot.

Another one I’m thinking about is (I think my train of thought left in this moment, I have no idea what I was going to say)

3/16/23

I think I’ve decided that Sonny is the Mayor’s kid. I don’t know how orphanages normally work but I figure the kids don’t normally get to go out that often, let alone by themselves, and I’ve imagined Sonny being very close to a lot of the people he sees in his life, just a very outgoing kid; to the point where he might as well be raised by the entire sector. Maybe he did get out at some point and the Mayor took enough of a liking to him that she decided to adopt him. Plus then it makes sense with his close connection to the triplets (Mayor Amberose’s other adopted kids), because he sleeps in the same area that they do.

Mark and Colin have a big creature that travels with them. I don’t know what I want it to look like right now but I know I want it to be big, and sometimes they ride on it. It might straight up be a Griffin, whether I’ll call it that idk, but I’ve always wanted to make a kind of ‘snowy owl+ tiger’ creature, so maybe I can do that while adding a few of my own changes. Honestly I’ll probably call it something different than a Griffin because hearing that just makes me think of medieval fantasy.

It might not even have wings so I doubt that’d even qualify it as a Griffin anyway, idk.

I know that I want Jennifer to be a very loud and random girl, very outgoing, honestly like a different flavor of Silvie if you know which oc I’m referring to, I guess you make enough characters and that just starts to happen. Either way Monica’s probably going to be the more serious one of their duo to balance them out, but I want her to be someone who is still just as likely to join in on Jennifer’s shenanigans, it’s just that Monica knows how to be ‘normal’ when it’s needed. I just can’t imagine her not being kind of a Dork when she was raised with and by two very dorky people.

Ooh, I just thought of a name for another possible place, it may or may not happen, but calling a place Parachute might be a cool thing to consider, maybe it could be like a giant marketplace or something.

Outsiders call those who live at the Fishbowl ‘Fish,’ (for obvious reasons) but also because of the bubbles they wear over their heads when they go out. It’s also generally used as an insult, where an outsider will call someone a ‘Fish’ if they think that person is acting weak or dumb, among other things.

3/20/25

I’m wondering if I should call the place that the Bench is at the Sandbox, but then I’d be tempted to call the mechanism around there the Swing Set or something, and while I am enjoying these funny names, I don’t want the entire world to sound childish. Better to keep the funny names to specific buildings rather than actual parts of the landscape I think.

Maybe the mechanism can be the thing called Parachute, cuz I do really wanna call something that, and I feel it fits enough, though it wouldn’t be as colorful as I imagined something called Parachute would be.

The mechanism is something I’m struggling with, not because of what it does, but because of my own brain claiming it’s not realistic when I’m trying to create a world that does not contain realistic things, like this place has a walkable see through path, get over it.

The mechanism is something Reese’s husband created, it was his life’s work and why the only living space they had was a small bunker, all their materials went elsewhere. The world they live in, while I call it Solarpunk, isn’t completely Solarpunk, it’s more so based off of Solarpunk ideals, if that makes sense. It is a world that has for the most part abandoned fossil fuels, for one thing, except for the desert area, which is now a wasteland. (Like most of my desert areas in fiction…)

The Finnegans:

Most side/supporting characters are not going to have super in depth design processes unless I have problems with them. Their concept Art probably won’t go much past this:
